The Luxury of Creative Time
Getting time to be creative can feel like a luxury.
Between jobs and kids, managing the household and maintaining a social life. Taking a couple of hours out of an already busy day to do something that doesn’t directly contribute to any of the above seems like a barely affordable indulgence.
I understand the feeling of not having the luxury of time to express yourself creatively as often as you’d like. And if you aren’t used to flexing your creative muscles, starting a creative project might appear even more intimidating.
It takes practice to build up creative strength. And if time is an issue, how does one do that?
Five minutes at a time.
Seriously, that’s all you need – 5 minutes daily nurturing your creativity to make you more creative.
The Power of 5 Minutes to Boost Your Creativity
Don’t believe five minutes a day is all it takes to enhance your creative abilities? Here are just a few reasons why it will work:
- Doing something daily strengthens the neural pathways associated with that activity.
- Creative activities, like mind mapping, can help the brain to find and explore connections between unrelated concepts or ideas, called associative thinking.
- Creative exercises such as doodling or mindful painting promote a flow state that quiets the mind allowing ideas to come more freely.
Practicing being creative even just a little bit every day can help make it easier to generate new ideas over time. And it establishes a habit of being creative. Consistency is crucial when it comes to improving any skill, including creativity.
Daily Creative Exercises for Busy Lives
Below are 3 ideas for creative exercises you can complete daily in 5 minutes.
Pick one, or if you have 15 minutes to spare, try them all for a well-rounded creative mind-boosting experience.
Set a goal for yourself to engage in a creative exercise for two weeks straight.
Repetitive Drawing
The Exercise: Draw the same thing every day for two weeks, altering the image in some way every day.
Intention: To encourage creative thinking and hone your drawing skills.
Supplies:
- Paper or a sketchbook
- Pencil
Steps:
- Pick something easy to draw. Anything. It could be a single tree, an eyeball, or your morning coffee cup. Keep it simple; we’re not aiming for elaborate landscapes here.
- Set a timer for 5 minutes and do a small, minimal drawing of your chosen subject. Include as much or as little detail as you want. Don’t worry about how good it looks. No one else needs to see it.
TIP: I separated my sketchbook page into sections beforehand. This gave me neat, evenly-sized squares for my drawings. It also kept them together so I could easily reference the previous day’s drawing.
- The next day, repeat your drawing adding another detail or two. For example, a swing hanging from a branch, an eyebrow, or steam coming out of the cup.
- The next day, add a different detail or additional details. Or try shading, adding colour, or even using a different drawing technique. Be as creative as you can in your 5 minutes.
- Repeat step #4 until the challenge is complete.
Freewriting
The Exercise: Write continuously for 5 minutes without stopping or editing.
Intention: To improve your writing fluency and unleash new ideas, perspectives, and insights.
Supplies:
- Paper or a notebook
- Pen or pencil
Steps:
- Get comfortable.
- Decide what you are going to write about, your writing prompt. Think of a word or phrase, a concept or idea, a question or a current problem. It can be anything you want. Use this as your starting point.
- Set a timer and write.
- Don’t stop writing until the timer goes off. Don’t look up. Don’t pass Go. Just keep writing. Write whatever comes to mind even if it doesn’t make sense or relate to your chosen topic. The point is to keep your hand moving.
TIP: Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, or anything else. Write fast and don’t overthink it. If stuck, write out your thoughts, even if it’s just “I don’t know what to write”. Something else will come to you. Follow your thoughts.
- Review what you wrote each day and at the end of the challenge. Reflect on any patterns or themes that emerge.
Visualization Inspiration
The Exercise: Look at visually stimulating content, such as art, photography or nature scenes and allow yourself to be inspired.
Intention: To stimulate creativity and boost mood & creative motivation.
Supplies:
- Art or photography books, home & garden or nature magazines, etc.
- Smartphone, computer, or tablet
Steps:
- Decide what you want to look at. This could be inspiration for art projects, fashion, home décor designs, or event planning, for example. Or images of beautiful beach scenes, or of striking art pieces or closeup photography. You could even spend 5 minutes watching painting videos on YouTube.
- Gather your materials or devices.
- Get comfortable and start viewing.
Cultivating Creativity Daily
These are just a few ideas of creative exercises you can do in only 5 minutes a day. There’s also, for example, brainstorming, creative reading, doodling, mind mapping, or word association.
Consistency is key when it comes to boosting creativity, so try to make engaging in creative exercises a daily habit. Over time, you’ll likely notice an improvement in your creative thinking abilities.
Be kind to yourself as you’re building your creative strength. Give yourself patience, and room to make mistakes. Most importantly, have fun.
